چکیده

J. Takanashi H. Tada H. Terada A.J. Barkovich SUMMARY: Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD) is a recently described clinicoradiologic syndrome. MR spectroscopy in 3 patients with AESD revealed decreased N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and elevated glutamine/glutamate complex (Glx) during the week of presentation. Afterward, Glx normalized, whereas NAA remained low in 2 patients with neurologic sequelae but nearly normalized in the third patient without neurologic sequelae. These findings support the hypothesis that excitotoxic neuronal damage plays an important role in the pathogenesis of AESD and suggest that MR spectroscopy might be predictive of outcome.

Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion associated with Epstein-Barr virus

We report the case of a 12 month-old female diagnosed with acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion. Epstein-Barr virus DNA was detected in both cerebrospinal fluid (511 copies/mL) and in serum (828 copies/mL) during the early stage of disease, suggesting a role for this virus in pathogenesis.

Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion

Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and reduced diffusion (AESD) is a syndrome of encephalopathy characterized by biphasic seizures and altered consciousness in the acute stage followed in the subacute stage by restricted diffusion in the subcortical white matter on magnetic resonance imaging. The etiology of AESD has been attributed to viral infection like influenza A and human herpes ...

Septic Encephalopathy Characterized by Acute Encephalopathy with Biphasic Seizures and Late Reduced Diffusion and Early Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus.

Infection, whether viral or bacterial, can result in various forms of brain dysfunction (encephalopathy). Septic encephalopathy (SE) is caused by an excessive immune reaction to infection, with clinical features including disturbed consciousness and seizures. Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD) is usually accompanied by viral infection in children and i...

Acute encephalopathy with callosal, subcortical and thalamic lesions

Acute encephalopathy is classified into multiple syndromes, such as acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD), clinically mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with a reversible splenial lesion (MERS) and acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE), characterized radiologically by lesions in the cerebral subcortical white matter, splenium of the corpus callosum and bil...

Distinguishing Acute Encephalopathy with Biphasic Seizures and Late Reduced Diffusion from Prolonged Febrile Seizures by Acute Phase EEG Spectrum Analysis

BACKGROUND To differentiate the features of electroencephalography (EEG) after status epileptics in febrile children with final diagnosis of either febrile seizure (FS) or acute encephalopathy for an early diagnosis. METHODS We retrospectively collected data from 68 children who had status epilepticus and for whom EEGs were recorded within 120 h. These included subjects with a final diagnosis...
